Trunk and shoulder strength are important in racquet sports, and specific exercises such as sit-ups, back extensions and rotator cuff exercises are beneficial. Designing A Racquet Sport Conditioning Class, Part 2
Energy system training. Racquet sports are predominantly anaerobic and require fast twitch muscle fibers to perform short bursts of high energy. Structuring exercises in timed intervals improves the anaerobic energy system and develops sport-specific skills. A 10- to 20-second exercise with a one to two work/rest ratio is a good starting point. As the students become more conditioned, work intervals can be lengthened and rest intervals shortened. This improves anaerobic endurance and recovery time, two of the key demands in racquet sports. Use the rest time to demonstrate correct form, explain the purpose and application of the exercise, and motivate improved performance for the next interval. Read the rest of this entry »
